No. Alumina (Al2O3) is aluminum oxide — a ceramic compound, not the metallic element aluminum. While both contain aluminum atoms, alumina is an electrically insulating ceramic with high thermal conductivity and hardness, whereas aluminum is a conductive metal. In PCBs, alumina provides dielectric isolation combined with heat dissipation, unlike aluminum-core (MCPCB) boards which require a dielectric layer.

Alumina PCBs are widely used in LED lighting and high-power LED modules, power semiconductor modules, automotive electronics, high-frequency switching power supplies, telecommunications equipment, aerospace and military components, semiconductor coolers, and electronic heaters. Their thermal stability and electrical insulation make them ideal wherever heat management and signal integrity are critical.

FX PCB offers three surface finish options for alumina PCBs: ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold), ENEPIG (Electroless Nickel Electroless Palladium Immersion Gold), and Immersion Silver. Each finish offers different advantages in solderability, wire bondability, and corrosion resistance to suit specific application requirements.

Alumina PCBs are available in standard thicknesses of 0.25, 0.38, 0.50, 0.635, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mm. Thickness tolerances range from ±0.03 mm for thinner boards (0.25–0.38 mm) up to ±0.05 mm for boards between 0.76–2.0 mm, ensuring precise dimensional control for high-reliability assemblies.

Alumina (Al2O3) offers a thermal conductivity of ≥24 W/(m·K), which is suitable for many power applications. Aluminum nitride (ALN), also available from FX PCB, provides significantly higher thermal conductivity of ≥170 W/(m·K) at 20°C, making ALN the preferred choice for extreme heat dissipation requirements such as high-power RF and military-grade electronics.

FX PCB's alumina ceramic PCBs currently support 1–2 layer designs using DPC (Direct Plate Copper) manufacturing technology. The process supports fine-line capability down to 0.075 mm minimum track width and spacing, with copper thicknesses ranging from 18–300 µm (0.5–8.5 oz), accommodating a wide range of circuit complexity and current-carrying requirements.
