Insulated Metal Substrate PCBs — IMS Circuit Boards

IMS stands for Insulated Metal Substrate. The term describes the board's fundamental construction: a metal substrate (the base layer providing structural support and thermal conduction) combined with an insulating dielectric layer that electrically isolates the metal from the copper circuit layer above it. The insulating layer bonds the layers together while simultaneously conducting heat away from components to the metal base.

Aluminum core IMS PCBs offer a cost-effective thermal solution with conductivity of 1–3 W/MK, making them the standard choice for LED lighting and general power applications. Copper core IMS PCBs deliver up to 400 W/MK thermal conductivity — significantly higher — making them ideal for ultra-high-power density applications such as radar, microwave, and RF systems where maximum heat dissipation is non-negotiable.

IMS PCBs outperform FR4 significantly in thermal management. FR4 boards have a thermal resistance of approximately 20–22°C/W at 1.5mm thickness, while aluminum IMS boards can dissipate heat 5–10 times more effectively than conventional epoxy-glass boards. Metal core PCBs can dissipate heat up to 9x faster than FR4, eliminating the need for separate heat sinks and reducing component temperatures to extend product lifespan.

Available surface finish options vary by IMS board type. Aluminum Base PCBs support HASL (Hot Air Solder Leveling), ENIG (Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold), OSP (Organic Solderability Preservative), and Immersion Silver. Copper Core PCBs support OSP, ENIG, and Immersion Tin.
